Camp dates for 2007 are July 1-7 and July 15-23. Everyone arrives Sunday morning and stays the entire week leaving on the following Saturday morning.
Any youth who are at least 14 years or older at the beginning of the camp week and are willing and ready to serve God in a very special way. We ask that youth come with an adult leader or come with a youth group who can provide an adult leader for every 6 youth.
We camp at Kirkwood Mission Center, a retreat center in Watha, NC right outside of Wilmington, NC just minutes from the beach. Males and females are separated into cabins each equipped with their own bathroom and shower area. Facilities include a lake, swimming pool, canoeing, outdoor worship area, basketball court, field areas, and an air-conditioned dining hall.
Each work group is comprised of about 6 youth and 1-2 adult leaders, supervised by a camp staff coordinator. They leave each morning to a pre-arranged project such as porch construction, painting a home, yard work, wheelchair ramp construction, repairing a roof, and other miscellaneous chores for a family in need.
Strong emphasis is placed on interacting with the families who are referred to us by community agencies or individuals. Our staff develop a relationship with each family before a work group is sent out and make arrangements for the family to be at home during the work day.
A camp staff is composed of 7 mature Christian college and post-college aged young adults who have undergone a thorough interview process. They are trained, experienced and dedicated to lead your group through a week of devotions, fun activities, community work projects and worship. Our staff will provide a non-threatening environment for youth to grow or discover their relationship with Jesus Christ.
Campers arrive Sunday morning by 11:00am in time for lunch followed by an afternoon packed with games, community building activities, breakdown into work groups, discussion of the week's activities, ending with an evening worship service and community prayer circle.
Monday through Thursday morning, campers wake up in time to eat breakfast, have morning devotions, receive work assignments and travel out to worksites for a day of ministry in the surrounding community. Each work group participates in a number of different projects such as building a wheelchair ramp or porch, painting a house, repairing a roof, or performing yard work for a family in need. Lunch is provided on the worksite along with a lunch-time devotion time as groups are encouraged to minister to the many needs of the family they are working for. Staff members visit each work group several times during the day to help supervise the work being done and to encourage spiritual growth. Each project concludes by early afternoon in time for each work group to return to camp and relax or swim before dinner.
After dinner, the camp staff provides an evening program to include a variety of community games such as a Volleyball tournament, Bible BINGO, board games, lip-sync, etc. and a designated time for each work group to share about the events of their day. Every evening the camp staff concludes with a planned worship service such as bible study groups, parable skits in the outdoor worship area, a praise and worship band, or worship out on the beach.
On Friday, campers break into 2-3 groups and visit a local childrens' center or nursing home to spend time ministering in a different setting. They eat lunch out and spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach returning to camp in time for a cook-out, campfire and closing worship service.
Saturday morning is often filled with tears and hugs goodbye as it is hard for the camp community to return home after an intense week of service and growing in Christ's love. Campers are usually heading home by 10:30am encouraged to continue ministering to those in need in their own communities.
Our camper fee of $300/camper is all inclusive covering all meals during the camp week, lodging, programming, staffing, projects and activities. CrossBridge raises donations from the community and church members in order to keep camper costs down. As a result, campers are charge less to attend than is actually necessary to run a camp week ($450/camper). We never want to deny any youth the opportunity to serve due to financial reasons.
